How to Declutter Your Closet AKA your life.
2016 is the year we finally get it together and literally out with the old and in with the new.
If you declutter your closet it’s bascially like decluttering your life. It feels un-freakin-real.
The best thing to do is to do it right. That way you aren’t decluttering your closet over and over and over again.
Let’s stop wasting precious time and just get to work.
Ok WHAT is eating up your space. Fix it.
First thing is stand and look at your closet. What is taking up the most room? is it big winter coats? Scarves? Shoes? Once you’ve figured out what is taking up the most space TAKE IT OUT. Re-organize. I’d suggest getting a super cute bin from IKEA or where ever, label it and put that bulky chaotic mess in there. It’ll look and feel so much better.
Get it out. ALL of it.
Take EVERYTHING out of your closet. All of it. CLEAN IT UP. You’re going to find things that may shock, terrify or maybe surprise you. Old beanie babies, dust bunnies, maybe that clutch you thought you had lost and it has a fresh $20 bill waiting in it. I mean the possibilities are endless.
Toss the randoms.
Don’t even get started with the randoms, just toss ’em. Oh a random sock? Toss. One random glove? Cya. That XXXXXL concert t shirt from 20 years ago? Girlbye.
Group project.
Alright, you know the drill, the magic of three. One group is keep, one is maybe and the last one is toss. To make it through this part put on an Apple Music playlist and your bitch face. You HAVE to be critical. You actually DONT need 9 black t shirts. Plus, you don’t actually throw away the clothes. Give them to Goodwill! Or your little cousin, sister, maybe another family member who would love some new clothes! There are consignment stores as another option as well.
365 Days Rule.
If you haven’t worn it in the last year chances are you won’t SO GET IT OUT OF HERE. As I’m writing this I’m actually realizing that I’m the biggest hypocrite. I convince myself down to my core that the gold sequined body suit will FORSURE be worn at New Years THIS year…. forsure. So, I know it’s hard but its 100% worth every tear filled inner struggle to just let it go.
One in, one out.
From this point forward, one article of clothing in and one goes OUT. It’ll keep you closet and sanity intact.
Slow and steady wins the race.
You don’t need to spend a day decluttering if you don’t have the time to spare. Do this process in sections. Top rack on Saturday and bottom rack on Sunday. You pick how you wanna declutter.
Keep it up.
Now you’ve done all this hard work so you deserve a glass of vino but also don’t let the hard work go to waste. Take 15 mins each week or so to just tidy up your closet.
Alright now I’ve even motivated myself. I’m heading into the jungle. See you on the other side.
