How are we this am? Feeling mighty fine I hope!

One thing I’ve been avoiding is summer coming to an end. I mean, I’m not totally complaining because PSL {pumpkin spice latté} season is among us, which is totally awesome. Chic sweaters and cozy scarves are a couple of my favourite things. ESPECIALLY right now. Who else is feeling the after math of patio drinks, margaritas, taco tuesday and Steigl Radlers? Well, I am… right around the mid-section :|

Okay so tell us a little about yourself:

My Name is Kaylor Betts and I am 25 years old.

I am an entrepreneur personal trainer and Sports nutritionist. When I am not Mr. Business and Fitness dude, I like to play guitar and piano, golf and I love to be around good people. I always look to do things differently and I disagree with what most of society thinks is the right way of doing things. Sure that sounds a bit harsh – So I will end with there is nothing on planet earth that I love more than my Mom.

Let’s start off at the beginning…. Were you not SO nervous to open TNP Fitness just over a year ago?:

I really wasn’t! Not quite sure how when I look back, but I am a very risk orientated dude. I risked everything I had to be honest but if it didn’t work, I would’ve gotten up and tried something else, just with a little more wisdom.

Honestly, it is such a great studio. You guys have done a tremendous job. But we need to know…… what is your biggest tip for girls wanting to look like VS models… Go:

Thank you for the kind words. I got a simple answer for you:

Choose your parents wisely! {Haha.. but seriously}

I work with a lot of girls on their fitness and I constantly see girls underestimate the role genetics plays in how your body looks. Those VS models, sure they eat great and work out hard – but they were given a gift. Your body can only look as great as your genetic makeup will allow. I really try to drill into my clients that when they make their fitness goals, they should NEVER compare their bodies to others – focus on being better, stronger, fitter and healthier than you were the day before!

 Will protein powder make me look like Schwarzenegger’s long lost sister?:

Not even close! In fact – Whey Protein Isolate is arguably one of the best things you can put in your body to rev up your metabolism and put on lean muscle mass. It’s a great snack in between meals, and be sure to have a quick one immediately after your workouts. The amount of muscle mass you have will be mostly determined by your level of testosterone in the body, which most women don’t have a lot of.

Okay so what type of protein powder should I get?:

Whey Protein Isolate.

Very Important. Whey protein is milk protein, which is very high quality and fast digesting. Isolate means they remove the carbs, sugars, fats, lactose, etc. and create a powder of just pure amino acids {protein}. I suggest “Power Whey Isolate” by BioX. Great quality, tastes great, and there is no artificial flavors. Not super pricy either.

 

What if I’m vegan? Do plant based powders work the same?:

Great Question. I am a fan of plant based powders as well, however I do prefer Whey Protein. There are 21 amino acids that make up protein. Animal based protein powders such as Whey Protein Isolate have more amino acids in it than vegan proteins do. However, if you are vegan – these are still great pure sources of protein that go right into the bloodstream and start doing great things for the body!

What should be in my morning smoothie?:

A good morning smoothie is going to have a good source of protein, fiber, healthy fats, and minimal sugar. Here is one you can try out that is Kaylor approved!

 

  • Half cup almond milk {unsweetened} or plain 2% Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup spinach or kale
  • Half cup frozen berries
  • 1 small banana
  • Scoop of chocolate or vanilla Whey Protein Isolate
  • 1 tbsp flaxseed oil or ground flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp raw vanilla extract
  • Optional: Stevia or Xylitol (natural sweeteners) or ice or water if need be.

 

Name the top 3 superfoods us girls should be having:

  1. Dark Chocolate (70% cocoa or higher)
  2. Salmon
  3. Blueberries

 

Any bikini season slimdown tricks??:

More: Protein, Fibre, Sweating, Water, Sex, and Sleep

Less: Sugar, TV, Overeating, and Drinking

Your HIIT classes are a hit, pun intended, if I can’t make class how can I do something similar at home?:

I highly encourage people to get out to a group class or get a personal trainer if at all possible. Whether you are at an Edmonton famous TNP HIIT class or somewhere else, it is beyond worth it! The music, instructor, atmosphere and people around you make you push 10x harder and burn 10x more cals than you can on your own. However, if that’s just not an option here is a simple but effective workout that you can do at home that will burn a pretty decent amount of calories in a short amount of time.

Repeat 4 x:

20 seconds of each

Mountain Climbers

Plank

Burpies

Squats

Pushups (from the knees if need be)

Squat Jumps

 

What the hell is a macro:

A Macro refers to A Macro-Nutrient. There are Macro-Nutrients and Micro-Nutrients.

Macro-Nutrients: Carbohydrates, Protein, and Fats

Micro-Nutrients: Vitamins, Minerals, Fiber and Water

I would like to thank anyone who has ever supported TNP in any way. You have helped make my first life dream a reality. I now have many new dreams, and I cannot wait to share them with you.

Lastly, If you don’t have goals and are not striving to do something remarkable in this lifetime – shame on you. Do not let life float by. Write down the life you want, and go out and get it. Not tomorrow. Now!

Lastly, what is {the spark} in your day you just can’t live without?:

Recently I have been getting up by 5am – there is something about being up as the sun rises. As I get ready I think about 2 things I am very blessed to have or appreciate in my life. Then I go to the gym. I listen to a good audio book that has some uplifting, motivational content that will spark my ambition for the day while I work up a good sweat. Then its time to go out and make things happen.

That’s my spark, and I am sticking to it! :)
